Six Nations Devon Tag Festival
By Mr Poustie
Well what an exciting end to the 6 Nations competition. Landscore, who entered two teams, for the first time, were placed top of pool A and top of Pool B after the first week with fabulous rugby being played in the mud and rain. Captains of the Tigers Oli, and Lions Joe had organised their teams well making shore his speedy girls were put into good positions to score tries. Great touch downs from Tilly and Honor and Jaz lead to good wins against. Both teams had well organised defensive lines and great tagging from Megan and Billy meant that the try count against both teams was kept down.
Despite very little training sessions since Christmas because of the poor weather players remembered to stick to their shapes and support runners.
The second week arrived along with Covid 19... disaster. Only 11 of the 18-player squad were in school. Decisions, uncomfortable ones, had to be made. The Tigers were reorganised with 7 players and with 4 stalwarts making up the Lions we borrowed three girls as substitutes from another school who hadn’t been clobbered by illness.
The Lions fought valiantly with our 4 boys pulling out all the stops to fight their way into the final of the Plate. Great efforts from Joe(capt.), Ben, Will and Thomas. The continued to play with grit and determination to end up winners of the Plate.
The Tigers with a new look line up which now included several Year 5 rising stars (Billy, Honor, Megan and Corinna). Played brilliantly to reach the Cup Final without losing. Oli, Alex and Theo played with great maturity and control whilst the newcomers played with skill and determination. The final itself was dominated by Landscore who ended up comfortable winners against Cheriton Bishop.
What was most impressive was how both teams played with smiles on their faces and never questioned the referee's decisions.
There is real strength in depth at Landscore and there are plenty of exciting times to look forward to. Year 3 and 4 children can’t wait to get started in September in what promises to be another great year for Tag Rugby at Landscore. It was a whole squad effort and the players who missed out on the second week had all played their part.
The Squad; Joe S, Oli, Ava, Tilly, Alex, Theo, Seb, Amy, Thomas, Maya, Honor, Jazz, Megan, Ben, Mani Will, Billy, Corinna.
