What we've been up to
The children have come back to school beautifully - lots of lovely smiles and wonderful manners!
We have played lots of co-operative learning games, where the children were able to practise their communication skills and they all worked really supportively in their new groups.
The children are all looking forward to all of the exciting opportunities in Year 5 and Year 6: Grenville House, London, the play, etc!
English
In English, we have started looking at a narrative called Red and the Wolf - a story based on Little Red Riding Hood. We've looked at the 'ingredients' of what makes it a good story (e.g. show, not tell; personification; character thoughts, etc). We will be recapping and extending the children's abilities to write effective speech. Your child should recall from Year 5 (Mr Williams hopes!) some rules we need when writing speech in our stories. Using the rules below, encourage your child to write some speech correctly.
Rules when writing speech:

Spelling
The children will have a spelling test every week on 10 spellings following a specific rule. The spellings for the spelling test on Friday 18th and Friday 25th September will be focusing on etymology. We will be choosing 10 spellings from the list below.
Please make sure your child is practising these spellings at home.
The children will also be learning the Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings across the year, so please have a look at some of these each week to help your child with learning them!
Maths
Year 5:
In Maths, we have been working on our Place Value unit. We have explored numbers up to one million, including introducing the ten thousands and millions place values. We have also been learning about Roman numerals and developing our understanding of how numbers are represented in different ways.

Year 6:
In Maths, we completed our unit on place value on Monday and began to look at our Four Operations unit. We have looked at comparing numbers, rounding numbers and negative numbers - all up to ten million!
