Team 1 DT / Theme Thursday 4.2.21

This week is the start of a mini DT (Design Technology) project to make a model castle. We know that lots of you have already had a go at creating castles over the last couple of weeks but we would really like you to join in with this to learn / practise some DT skills.

Today we are focusing on learning how to join the castle walls together and how to make a drawbridge. This is intended to be a chance to explore and experiment. We are not creating a finished piece today.

Activities:

1) How can we join 2 walls together?

We would like you to explore ways of joining 2 walls together (without you holding on to them!) Have a go on your own first, before you ask a grown up. Once you have had a go, share your ideas or attempts with them and see if it can be improved.

You could use newspaper or paper.

What do you have to do to the paper to be able to join it to the other piece? Can you create a bigger surface area to fix them together, rather than the thin end of the paper?

Click here for an idea if you need some help.

Now, think about how to get the walls to stand up.

What could you do to the bottom of the walls to give them a wider, stable base?

HINT: What did you do to the tower which could help you with this?

Click here for an idea if you need some help.

We would like you to practise these skills until you feel confident with them.

2) Can you make a drawbridge that opens and closes?

You could use newspaper or paper.

What shape and size does your drawbridge need to be?

How can you join the drawbridge to the castle wall?

How can you make the drawbridge open and close?

Click here for some help if needed.

We know that you will have lots of great ideas of your own too, so please feel free to adapt and explore.
