Every child in the Early Years Foundation Stage at Landscore School is valued and, from the very beginning, we help our Reception children to develop a sense of belonging and understand that they are a special and important member of the team.

We will nurture and encourage every child during the first year of their school journey; we know that our children will develop and learn at different rates, and the adults at school will help them to build on their learning throughout their Reception Year so that they reach their full potential.

We take the time to find out and respond to the children’s individual interests and fascinations.  We ensure that our Reception children have access to rich learning opportunities through their own child initiated play and through adult led playful teaching.  We aim to provide a stimulating and engaging environment to excite our children, inspire them to question, and to develop their curiosity.

We believe that every child is unique, and, in the Reception Year at Landscore School, we strive to support all pupils to be constantly learning and to become resilient, capable, confident and self-assured individuals.

Through fostering warm and positive relationships with our pupils, children in the Reception class learn to be strong and independent individuals and are happy, confident and successful learners.

Handwriting

In EYFS at Landscore we use the Little Wandle Handwriting programme.

The Little Wandle Handwriting programme provides a structured approach to teaching handwriting right from the start of Reception to ensure children are 'taught handwriting precisely, in a clearly sequenced progression, starting from reception, to support their gradual acquisition of skills.'

In our school, Little Wandle Handwriting is taught alongside Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, and the programme progression takes account of children’s growing phonic knowledge. It uses the well‑loved and familiar mnemonics from the core Little Wandle programme to ensure children can make links in their learning

Maths

At Landscore, we use White Rose Maths to support the teaching of early mathematics in  Reception.

In Early Years, the focus is on helping children develop a strong understanding of number through play, exploration, and practical activities.

The approach encourages children to talk about numbers, explore patterns, and use objects to represent mathematical ideas.
