Year 1 Maths 1.3.21

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOUR MATHS TODAY, SO PLEASE EMAIL A PHOTO OF YOUR WORK TO ME.

Today in maths we are starting a new sequence of work on measurement. This week, we are focusing on measuring length and height.

Before we begin, let's practise counting in 2s, like we did last week, to get warmed up and ready to start. Click here and get ready to join in.

Now have a look at this video.

You could click here for the power point slides if you would prefer to go at your own pace.

Remember to share your ideas and answers with a grown up.

Today's activities can be found within the video / power point. Please stop and have a go at the different tasks as and when instructed.

  • Can you find 3 things that are longer than a spoon?

  • Can you find 3 things that are shorter than a spoon?

REMEMBER TO LINE UP THE ENDS OF THE OBJECTS WHEN YOU ARE COMPARING LENGTHS, just like they demonstrate in the video / power point.

If you are enjoying measuring and would like some more measuring challenges:

  • Can you find 3 things that are longer than / shorter than your foot?

  • Pick your favourite toy and search for 3 things that are longer than / shorter than the toy.

  • Choose 2 or 3 objects from around the house. Line up the objects so that the ends are level and compare them to find out which object is the longest / shortest. Repeat this for different sets of objects.

Grown ups:

Try and encourage your child to talk in full sentences about what they find when they are comparing / measuring.

For example:

The spoon is shorter than the table. The scarf is longer than the book. The rubber is the same length as the pencil sharpener.

Happy measuring!
