We have now moved onto learning Phase 5 in our phonics work. The children need to be able to read and spell words containing the graphemes (spelling choices) in phase 3 and are learning some new alternative spellings in phase 5.

The phonics play website also has some good games which will allow your child to practise and apply their phase 3 phonic knowledge. There are also opportunities to practise phase 2 sounds / graphemes if your child is not yet secure with these or you could extend them with phase 5 if you feel your child is ready to move on.
The phonics bloom website also has some good games which will allow your child to practise and apply their phase 3 phonic knowledge. There are also opportunities to practise phase 2 sounds / graphemes if your child is not yet secure with these or you can extend them with phase 5.
In Year 1, the children also need to be able to read and spell a range of high frequency words (words that are commonly used).
Click here for a list of words that your child can practise reading and spelling. We would recommend you pick a set of 4 or 5 words at a time to focus on.
The Little Birds Spelling game is good for helping to read and spell some of the Year 1 words. You need to click on Year 1 and then choose a bird box for a list of words which are suitable for your child.
You could also try the Topmarks website, which has a selection of games for spelling and reading.
If your child will be off school for more than 2 days, please contact Mrs Williams or Mrs Miller for a more specific phonics focus / work pack.
