Year 1 Phonics - Spring 2022

We are continuing to work on learning new graphemes (spelling choices) in Phase 5 in our phonics work this term. We are also continuing to practise the phase 3 graphemes.

We have allocated your child with Bug Club games to practise the graphemes we have been learning in class. Click here for information about your child's log in details and how to access Bug Club.

Alternatively, you can click on the Bug Club logo on the Team 1 and Team 1 virtual school pages to access Bug Club.

Click here for a list of phase 3 graphemes.

Click here for a list of phase 5 graphemes.

The phonics play website has some games which will allow your child to practise and apply their knowledge of phase 5 graphemes. There are also opportunities to practise phase 2 and phase 3 sounds / graphemes if your child is not yet secure with these.

The phonics bloom website also has some games which will allow your child to practise and apply their phase 5 phonic knowledge. There are also opportunities to practise phase 2 and phase 3 sounds / graphemes if your child is not yet secure with these.

You could also try a sound hunt at home together. Read a book together at home and look / listen for words with a particular sound eg the 'ai' sound, like in 'rain'. Can you find different graphemes for this sound such as 'ay' in 'play', or 'a-e' in 'cake'? You could make a list of these different words.

In Year 1, the children also need to be able to read and spell a range of high frequency words (words that are commonly used).

Click here for a list of words that your child can practise reading and spelling. We would recommend you pick a set of 4 or 5 words at a time to focus on.

The Little Birds Spelling game is good for helping to read and spell some of the Year 1 words. You need to click on Year 1 and then choose a bird box for a list of words which are suitable for your child.

You could also try the Topmarks website, which has a selection of games for spelling and reading.

We would also remind you to look at the weekly email for more specific details on what we are covering each week.

If your child will be off school for more than 2 days, please contact Mrs Williams or Mrs Miller for a more specific phonics focus / work pack.
